The EF Smart Plan is modeled after the federal Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), which covers 3.6 million federal employees. The TSP has six types of investments: a fixed income fund, a bond fund, an S&P 500 index fund, a small-cap index fund, an international index fund, and low cost lifestyle funds. As the largest defined-contribution plan in America, the TSP has the lowest investment costs (0.06%) in the nation.

The EF Smart Plan offers the same investment categories as the TSP and has the lowest average expense ratio (0.20%) of any diversified mutual fund line-up offered to small business in the nation.
